Memphis Depay flew to Manchester on a private jet for a secret meeting with Liverpool over a potential summer transfer, reports The Mirror.
It was initially reported that the PSV Eindhoven starlet had flown to
Manchester to meet with officials from Manchester United but it is now
believed he met with Liverpool's managing director Ian Ayre.
PSV granted Liverpool permission to discuss personal terms with Depay
after the Reds declared their interest in making a formal offer once
the summer transfer window opens.
The 21-year-old was hugely impressed with what Liverpool had to say.
Not only was it their commitment to signing him, but their project under
Brendan Rodgers that left Depay excited.
Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the man
dubbed the next Cristiano Ronaldo with Louis van Gaal having previously
worked with him for the Holland national squad.
Best chance
While
Old Trafford remains the most likely destination for Depay, Liverpool
have given themselves the best chance of beating them to his signature
with this positive round of talks.
Paris Saint-Germain are also believed to have held talks with the
forward, but it seems those around him are keen to see him move to the
Premier League.
Recommendation
Both Bolo Zenden and Dirk Kuyt have recommended a move to Liverpool,
but Depay will still wait for Manchester United to make an offer before
choosing his next destination.
PSV will be looking for around £20m for Depay, who is favourite to
seal the Eredivise golden boot after scoring 21 goals so far this
season.
Rodgers wants Depay to help convince Raheem Sterling that Liverpool
is the best place for young players, but also sees a need to find a
greater source of goals after losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona last
summer.
