Lampard: A mistake for Chelsea to sell Sturridge
The England vice-captain believes his international
team-mate has found the belief he requires at Liverpool after struggling
for opportunities at Stamford Bridge
Departing Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes selling Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool was a mistake by the Stamford Bridge outfit.
The England striker left the Blues in January 2013 and has gone onto score 31 Premier League goals in just 37 starts for Brendan Rodgers's side.
The England striker left the Blues in January 2013 and has gone onto score 31 Premier League goals in just 37 starts for Brendan Rodgers's side.
That form has seen him called up to England's World Cup squad for
the upcoming tournament in Brazil, with the former Manchester City
trainee seen as a key figure in Roy Hodgson's side.
And Lampard admitted he is pleased for his international team-mate after seeing him grow frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities at Chelsea.
"I’m really pleased for Studge [Sturridge] because, at Chelsea, I think he was a bit frustrated. He felt he could have played more," he told the Sunday Mirror.
"He felt the position he was playing in was one he wasn’t happy with and he felt it was good for him to move.
"It was maybe not good business for Chelsea. It looks bad when you look back, but, at the time, you never know. Individually, for him, it was a good move. He has gone from strength to strength.
"I think he does get the credit he deserves now, but with what Luis Suarez does alongside him at Liverpool, maybe that takes the edge off the praise."
Lampard, who has announced that he will be leaving Chelsea after 13 years with the club, feels that the belief that Sturridge has found since he moved to Merseyside has played a major part in his improved record.
"Studge has got that inner-belief and no wonder, because he is one of the sharpest players I have seen off the mark, with his quick feet around the box and he gets his shots away, he is very difficult to defend against. I think he is comfortable at Liverpool.
"At Chelsea and struggling a bit to get in the team and then he goes and he has a lot of belief in him there at Liverpool, you can see Brendan Rodgers really trusts in him, he started scoring and he hasn’t stopped.”

Cameroon players ready to take off for Brazil after bonus dispute
Cameroon's players are finally on their way to the World Cup after
initially refusing to board a flight to Brazil because of a dispute over
bonuses.
The squad, including former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o, refused to fly to South America on Sunday morning.
But they eventually agreed a financial package with the nation's football federation after an emergency meeting.
The squad will take off from Yaounde at 21:30 BST, 12 hours late, and should arrive in Brazil on Sunday evening.
Team coach Volker Finke had said players were
complaining that the £61,000 they were due to be paid for figuring in
the World Cup was not enough.
After agreeing an end to the row, Cameroon Football Federation president Joseph Owona said: "Everything has been resolved.
"We have opted for transparency. There is no problem
and I think the team needs to be mobilised for all to look in one
direction."
Cameroon are in Group A with the hosts, Croatia and Mexico.
World Cup 2014: England squad arrive in Brazil
England have arrived in Brazil ahead of the start of the 2014 Fifa World Cup.
Roy Hodgson's side ended their preparations with a
0-0 draw with Honduras in Miami
on Saturday night.
England will be based at the Royal Tulip Hotel,
south of Rio's city centre and will be training on a secure military base underneath the imposing Sugar Loaf mountain.
England open their World Cup campaign against Italy on Saturday, 14 June, a game
you can see live on the BBC.
They then face Uruguay on Thursday, 19 June before ending Group D against Costa Rica on Tuesday, 24 June.
Saturday's friendly against Honduras was delayed by
more than 40 minutes because of a thunderstorm and England were on the
end of some heavy challenges in a bad-tempered second half.
The squad and staff flew to Rio straight after the game.
Manager Hodgson was relieved to escape without any injuries and now has six days to prepare for the Italy match.
He said: "It has been three excellent weeks of preparation.
"The squad is growing stronger, they are bonding
together very well and the mood is one of quiet optimism and a
reasonable degree of confidence.
"That is all you can hope for.
"Now is when the real football begins and I am happy
that we are in good spirits and the players have really done as much as
we could ask of them."
The tournament begins on Thursday, 12 June when hosts Brazil face Croatia in Sao Paulo.
There will be 31 matches shown live on BBC television and online,
starting with Spain v Netherlands on Friday 13 June, with 24 days of
live coverage on BBC Radio 5 live.
There will be live text commentary on all 64 matches
throughout the tournament, available on the BBC Sport website and app
for mobile, tablet and connected TV.
Gary Lineker leads the TV coverage and will be joined
by former England captain Rio Ferdinand, Thierry Henry - a World Cup
winner and France's record goal scorer - and former Dutch midfielder and
current AC Milan coach Clarence Seedorf.

Klose breaks Germany goals record
Klose, 35, came off the bench to head in his 69th international goal as Joachim Low's side found some rampant form in the final 20 minutes.
But Reus, who was in tears as he left the pitch, picked up an ankle injury and will now not fly to Brazil.
Armenia were level with 20 minutes to go before Germany hit lethal form.
All-time World Cup finals scorers
- 15 goals - Ronaldo (Brazil)
- 14 goals - Gerd Muller, Miroslav Klose (Germany)
- 13 goals- Just Fontaine (France)
- 12 goals - Pele (Brazil)
A goalless first-half ended with
Borussia Dortmund forward Reus going over an ankle and being replaced
by Arsenal's Lukas Podolski.
Podolski made the opener for Chelsea's Andre Schurrle
early in the second half, Schurrle flicking in with a delightful
backheel at the near post.
Arsenal's record signing Mesut Ozil hit a post after a lovely move but Germany were then embarrassed when substitute Kevin Grosskreutz gave away a penalty immediately after coming on, bringing down Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who scored from the spot.
The upset was on but a flurry of four goals in 10 minutes killed Armenia off. First Podolski ran on to Ozil's lovely pass and swept home left-footed, defender Benedikt Howedes scored at the second attempt and then crossed for Klose to head in and eclipse Gerd Muller's long-standing national team record.
Klose is the only out-and-out striker in the German squad and can become the leading scorer in World Cup history with two goals in Brazil.
Another substitute, Mario Gotze, then helped himself to a late brace, firing in from another Podolski pass before burying the loose ball after good work from Grosskreutz.
Germany start their World Cup campaign against Portugal on 16 June.

World Cup 2014: Capello did not believe in me - Steven Gerrard
England captain Steven Gerrard claims former manager Fabio Capello never believed in him to lead the side.
But the Liverpool midfielder says that current boss Roy Hodgson has total faith in him.
Gerrard was
England captain under Capello
during the dismal World Cup campaign in 2010.
"Capello didn't believe in me as his number one captain, but Roy does," he said.
Gerrard took over the armband under Capello almost by
default in South Africa but felt the Italian was not convinced by his
credentials.
Capello's captain, Rio Ferdinand, was injured in England's first training session and John Terry was overlooked
after being stripped of the armband
previously, leaving Gerrard to step in.

19 June: v Uruguay, World Cup, Sao Paulo
24 June: v Costa Rica, World Cup, Belo Horizonte
Speaking about Capello's lack of
belief, he said: "I don't know what it was. I think he believed in me
as a player and rated me as a player.
"It was totally up to him but for me, now, I know I'm Roy's number one captain and that's a big confidence boost for me."
Gerrard, who is expected to be back to lead the side
against Honduras in Miami's Sun Life Stadium on Saturday (2145 BST),
added of Capello: "Our relationship was totally fine and I enjoyed
working under him but, at the time, we had Rio Ferdinand here and maybe
John Terry as well.
"Maybe he thought they were going to offer something different from me or they were his preferred choices."
World Cup 2014: Steven Gerrard's highs & lows
Gerrard said he would still have acted as a figure of
authority even without the captaincy, given his experience and the fact
that he has led Liverpool with distinction for so many years.
"I'd have still have put an arm around the shoulder of the young players," said Gerrard.
"Just because I'm the captain with the armband on, I
still want the likes of Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Phil Jagielka to
still be leaders in there with me and back me up and we all do it
together.
"I'd rather be captain than vice-captain that's for sure."
