Premier League 2014-15: End of season review

Chelsea won the Premier League with three games to spare, while Burnley, QPR and Hull were relegated into the Championship.
But which of those outcomes did I predict when I previewed the Premier League season in August?
Who has impressed and who hasn't? Which teams, players and managers have sprung a surprise and which have disappointed?
Here I go through each team and rate their performance, as well as my own...

CHELSEA 1st (prediction 1st)

Jose Mourinho, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa
Jose Mourinho has had the best player in the league in Eden Hazard, a creative fulcrum in Cesc Fabregas and a finisher in Diego Costa
Manager: Jose Mourinho 9 out of 10 Players: 8 out of 10 Season: 8 out of 10
Chelsea were worthy Premier League champions as they were the best team from start to finish, setting the pace from the opening games with flair, then finishing strongly with resilience to complete the job. The Capital One Cup made it a season of double success but marks off for a Champions League campaign that ended in the last 16.
Mourinho put the finishing touches to the side that finished last season empty-handed by signing a goalscorer in Diego Costa and a midfield creator in Cesc Fabregas - and in Eden Hazard he had the season's superstar.

MANCHESTER CITY 2nd (prediction 2nd)

Manager: Manuel Pellegrini 5 Players: 5 Season: 5
Manchester City made a lame attempt at defending the title - especially after the turn of the year when Chelsea moved into the distance and manager Manuel Pellegrini seemed unable to inspire his side - and there was even a worry at one stage that they would not make the top four.
Eventually finished second but a poor season by their standards and by the standards of the players in their squad. Yaya Toure, usually City's key performer, was pedestrian so expect City's driven and ambitious Abu Dhabi-based owners to put matters right this summer.

ARSENAL 3rd (prediction 5th)

Manager: Arsene Wenger 6 Players: 7 Season: 7
Another qualification for the Champions League and signs of greater steel with wins at Manchester City in the Premier League and at Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-final.
At no stage, however, were Arsenal ever relevant to the Premier League title pursuit so no tangible progress, especially after a disappointing Champions League exit to Monaco. Still off the pace and with work needed to be done.
The end-of-term report will read better if they can beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 30 May.

European masters

Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League group stages for the last 18 seasons

MANCHESTER UNITED 4th (prediction 3rd)

Manager: Louis van Gaal 7 Players: 7 Season: 7
The idea of United finishing in the top four was greeted by scorn before the start of the season, but with a proven manager of Louis van Gaal's ilk in place and quality still in the squad it was always a realistic possibility.
Van Gaal shuffled his resources, £59.7m signing Angel Di Maria and on-loan striker Falcao were big disappointments, but he got it right during a golden spell that brought big wins against Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City. No trophies but a season that will have satisfied Old Trafford's powerbrokers.

TOTTENHAM 5th (prediction 7th)

Manager: Mauricio Pochettino 6 Players: 6 Season: 6
The emergence of striker Harry Kane and reaching the Capital One Cup final, where they lost to Chelsea, were highlights but in many respects Pochettino's first season at White Hart Lane was one where Spurs stood still.
The impression remains that the Argentine has still not got the players he wants - or needs - to implement his trademark high pressing style.

LIVERPOOL 6th (prediction 4th)

Liverpool
Steven Gerrard is definitely leaving Liverpool. But what about Brendan Rodgers?
Manager: Brendan Rodgers 5 Players: 4 Season: 5
Said pre-season that this could either be the start of a great Anfield era or one of the great missed opportunities after just failing to win the Premier League last year. Now we know.
A season of three parts. Poor until December, then excellent until March before a collapse that saw Liverpool lose to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final and miss out on the Champions League places - in other words a failure.
Rodgers and his transfer committee have had a poor return for an outlay of more than £100m, armed with £75m just from the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. Now they must work out how to replace iconic captain Steven Gerrard and solve the unrest surrounding Raheem Sterling.
And as if all that was not unsettling enough, the horrendous humiliation of that last day 6-1 thrashing at Stoke City will be a shock that will reverberate through the entire club - and not the best result for manager Rodgers to take into his end-of-season review with owners Fenway Sports Group.

SOUTHAMPTON 7th (prediction 14th)

Southampton
Ronald Koeman had to rebuild Southampton and recruited well
Manager: Ronald Koeman 9 Players: 8 Season: 8
Never joined the band expecting Saints to be relegated but never expected such an outstanding season either after Pochettino left for Spurs and players such as Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers were sold.
New manager Ronald Koeman made some magnificent acquisitions and guided Saints through a season that was a delight to everyone at St Mary's. Outstanding.

SWANSEA 8th (prediction 16th)

Manager: Garry Monk 8 Players: 7 Season: 7
Never expected the Swans to be in trouble but they not only survived under manager Garry Monk, they flourished for a deserved top-half finish and a club record Premier League points haul of 56.
Monk's astute handling of his squad and sound grasp of tactics marks him down as a manager with a bright future at the Liberty Stadium.

STOKE 9th (prediction 9th)

Jon Walters scores for Hull
Stoke's campaign culminated with a stunning 6-1 win over Liverpool
Manager: Mark Hughes 8 Players: 7 Season: 7
Fine campaign of consolidation, and more, as Mark Hughes built on his first season in charge after succeeding Tony Pulis in 2013, with a second one in which Stoke secured a club record points tally in the Premier League.
Hughes has repaired a reputation damaged at QPR and is ambitious enough to look for further ways to progress The Potters next season.

CRYSTAL PALACE 10th (prediction 12th)

Manager: Neil Warnock 3 / Alan Pardew 8 Players: 7 Season: 7
A season separated by the struggles until Neil Warnock's sacking in December and the successes and optimism engendered by the appointment of Alan Pardew.
Palace looked doomed until Pardew returned to Selhurst Park, but were rejuvenated almost instantly and ended in perfect safety, powered by the attacking talent of players such as Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon.

EVERTON 11th (prediction 6th)

Romelu Lukaku and Aaron Lennon
Everton spent big on Romelu Lukaku, left, signing him for a club record £28m, but struggled badly for much of the campaign
Manager: Roberto Martinez 5 Players: 5 Season: 4
From the high ground of almost qualifying from the Champions League last season, Everton's decline has been sharp and much of the season deadly dull, played out among much unrest from supporters about the somewhat passive style of play under Roberto Martinez.
No cup runs to offer hope and little of the excitement of last season. Big summer ahead for Martinez as Everton must keep star turns such as Romelu Lukaku, James McCarthy, Ross Barkley and John Stones while rebuilding to challenge the top six again.

WEST HAM 12th (prediction 11th)

Manager: Sam Allardyce 5 Players: 5 Season: 6
A disappointing second half of the season overshadowed all the good results of the early months of the campaign when Sam Allardyce's team played fine football and goals were flowing around the attacking impetus of Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.
The tame conclusion has left the Hammers in a state of flux, with Allardyce leaving and a replacement needing to be appointed to lead them towards their move into the Olympic Stadium for the 2016-17 season.

Big Sam's West Ham reign

Allardyce had been at the club since June 2011, earning promotion from the Championship in his first season in charge and ensuring that the team finished no lower than 13th place (2013-14) in his three top-flight campaigns.

WEST BROM 13th (prediction 19th)

Saido Berahino, Darren Fletcher, Tony Pulis
Tony Pulis, right, brought in Darren Fletcher, centre, to a West Brom side reliant on the goals of Saido Berahino, left
Manager: Alan Irvine 4 / Tony Pulis 8 Players: 6 Season: 6
Feared for West Brom pre-season after the appointment of Irvine, who had failed in previous posts at Preston and Sheffield Wednesday. Those concerns were realised as Irvine, a gentleman and a fine coach if not a manager, lost his job in December after only seven months with West Brom in 16th place.
In came Tony Pulis and the relegation worries drifted away. Pulis, whose work is so often underrated, organised West Brom brilliantly and the landmark win at Old Trafford was a testimony to his expertise.

LEICESTER 14th (prediction 18th)

Manager: Nigel Pearson 7 Players: 7 Season: 7
This pre-season prediction was almost looking a trifle optimistic as The Foxes struggled and lay bottom of the table at the start of April. There was little sign of what was to come, even though they had always been in games throughout the campaign.
Manager Nigel Pearson was a controversial and divisive figure who had argued with one of his own fans, appeared to throttle Crystal Palace's James McArthur in a touchline clash and bizarrely called a reporter "an ostrich" in an embarrassing televised attack.
All that was forgotten as he inspired an outstanding late run to safety, rattling off wins against West Brom, Swansea City, Burnley, Newcastle and Southampton to move away from trouble.

NEWCASTLE 15th (prediction 8th)

Manager: Alan Pardew 6 / John Carver 3 Players: 3 Season: 3
Only defence for this optimistic pre-season prediction was the rider that plain logic could never be attached to Newcastle United. And so it has proved.
Newcastle were ninth after Pardew's last game, a win against Everton in late December. He left for Crystal Palace and John Carver was appointed in what now looks the rather complacent belief that there was no threat of relegation.
Carver's hapless reign was underlined by eight straight defeats that culminated in the 3-0 loss at Leicester and his subsequent astonishing attack on defender Mike Williamson, who he suggested had got himself sent off deliberately.
The club has been little short of a shambles in the closing weeks of the season.
John Carver
Newcastle stayed in the division under John Carver, but won just three games under his stewardship

SUNDERLAND 16th (prediction 10th)

Manager: Gus Poyet 4 /Dick Advocaat 8 Players: 5 Season: 4
Sunderland failed to build on the momentum from last season's escape and the threat of relegation saw the end of Gus Poyet in late March with only nine games to go.
It was a gamble by owner Ellis Short but one that worked after the appointment of the experienced Dick Advocaat saw Sunderland rediscover their steel and collect enough points to survive with a game to spare.

Advocaat at the Black Cats

Sunderland is the 20th - and final, he says - job Advocaat has taken as a manager or assistant
The Black Cats had won just four games before he replaced Gus Poyet on 17 March
He has previously had four stints on the coaching staff of the Netherlands national team

ASTON VILLA 17th (prediction 17th)

Manager: Paul Lambert 4 / Tim Sherwood 8 Players: 6 Season: 5
Villa, as a club and a team, looked to be dying a slow death until the labouring Paul Lambert was sacked in February after they dropped into the relegation zone.
Tim Sherwood's positive outlook has electrified Villa Park - Christian Benteke, in particular. The new manager has not only steered them out of trouble but has also guided them to the FA Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley.
Win there and those marks go up.

HULL 18th (prediction 13th)

Manager: Steve Bruce 5 Players: 5 Season: 4
Hull City thought they were edging towards safety with wins against Crystal Palace and Liverpool, but it was a false dawn and they were back in trouble.
The vast experience of Steve Bruce was not enough to keep them from the drop and big-money buys such as Tom Ince and club record signing £10m Abel Hernandez - a Uruguayan brought in from Palermo - were failures. Bruce now faces what he will regard as a Herculean task of rebuilding from the Championship.

BURNLEY 19th (prediction 20th)

Sean Dyche
Sean Dyche got the best out of the players at his disposal
Manager: Sean Dyche 7 Players: 5 Season: 4
High marks for Dyche, despite relegation, for getting everything out of players who were huge on spirit but ultimately short on Premier League quality. Could he have spent more? Maybe - but others in trouble have spent big and it has not kept them away from danger.
Burnley have not been short of effort and application but simply lacked enough players who could turn around those fine margins, their inability to score goals a very obvious flaw.

QPR 20th (prediction 15th)

Manager: Harry Redknapp 4 / Chris Ramsey 4 Players: 3 Season: 2
A shocking season from first to last. Hopeless under Harry Redknapp and not much better under Chris Ramsey. Looked a relegated side for most of the season.
Now face the prospect of losing stand-out performers such as Charlie Austin and also goalkeeper Robert Green. Just a dismal, joyless season and quite a reconstruction job for Ramsey after his permanent appointment.

Danny Welbeck: Arsenal's fifth-round match-winner will miss FA Cup final
Danny Welbeck has been ruled out of the FA Cup final and England's upcoming games after failing to recover from a knee injury.
The Arsenal striker, who scored the fifth-round winner against his previous club Manchester United, missed the final five matches of the Premier League season.
And Arsene Wenger has now confirmed Welbeck's ongoing injury will keep him out of England's games against Republic of ireland and Slovenia on top of Saturday's Wembley showdown with Aston Villa.
"Danny Welbeck will not be fit, not for us, nor for England," Wenger said at his pre-Wembley press conference. "We called them yesterday, the FA, to explain that his bone bruising of the knee has not healed."
Confirmation of Welbeck's absence apparently leaves Wenger with a straight choice between Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott at centre-forward, but the Arsenal boss would not be drawn on his selection plans

Real Madrid close on Rafael Benitez as new manager

Rafael Benitez is expected to be installed as the new Real Madrid manager after his season with Italian club Napoli finishes on Sunday.
The former Liverpool manager, 55, has not yet signed a contract with the 10-time European champions but negotiations are at an advanced stage.
Carlo Ancelotti was sacked as Real Madrid manager on Monday after two seasons in charge at the Bernabeu.
Napoli have called a news conference for 12:00 BST on Thursday.
Italian Ancelotti, 55, secured Real's 10th European Cup last season.
But this year they were knocked out by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals, while Barcelona won La Liga.
Spaniard Benitez has managed in his home country before, winning two La Liga titles and the Uefa Cup with Valencia.
He has been at Napoli since 2013 leading the Serie A side to the Coppa Italia last season.
The Spaniard had also been linked with the vacant job at West Ham, following the departure of Sam Allardyce.

LIVERPOOL NEWS....

Kolo Toure and Andre Wisdom have signed new Liverpool contracts.
Wisdom, 22, has put pen to paper on a long-term deal until 2019 while Toure has signed a one-year contract extension.

BARCA PROGRESS POGBA TALKS

Barcelona director Ariedo Braida has reportedly met with his Juventus counterpart Guiseppe Morata to continue talks regarding the signing of Paul Pogba.
According to Marca, the pair had lunch in Italy today and theorder of the day was to continue negotiations for a future deal regarding Pogba.
While Barca cannot sign any players this year due to a transfer ban, Pogba is reportedly happy to stay with Juve for another season and then join the Catalans in 2016, if he opts for them over Real Madrid.

CASILLAS WELCOMES DE GEA

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas insists he would welcome the arrival of David de Gea this summer and says he told club president Florentino Perez he would make a move for the Manchester United goalkeeper.
De Gea, who has one year left on his contract at United, has been linked heavily with a summer switch to Madrid, with the Bernabeu giants keen to sign him.
“If De Gea does come here, he'll be welcomed," he told El Larguero on Cadena Ser. "Competition is healthy – there is no clause in my contract which states that I have to be first choice.
“We'll have to compete for a place like we do with Spain. De Gea is a great bloke and a goalkeeper for the present and the future. He can handle pressure and the experience he has had at Manchester United will have served him well.”
Casillas also admitted he advised club president Perez to make a move for De Gea.
“Florentino once asked me if it were up to me, which keeper would I sign. I prefer Spanish keepers - Sergio Rico, Asenjo and De Gea. Right now, De Gea is the expert out of the three," he added.

REDS BATTLE UNITED FOR £30M BENTEKE

Manchester United may miss out on the signature of in-demand Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The broadsheet claims that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is planning a £30m move to take the Belgium to Anfield this summer.

'YAYA IS STAYING'

Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini fully expects midfielder Yaya Toure to remain at the club next season.
Toure has been linked with a move to Inter Milan, but speaking on City's post-season tour of America Pellegrini said the Ivorain intends to stay at Eastlands.
"When you asked me around one month ago, I always said that Yaya was very happy here," he said.
"He does not have any intention to go to another club. Maybe his agent is talking about other things, but the reality is that Yaya is staying here with us."

SPURS TO LAUNCH £12M INGS BID

According to Sky Sources, Tottenham Hotspur are set to make a £12m offer for Burnley striker Danny Ings.
Ings is out of contract at Turf Moor at the end of June, but Spurs are hoping that an early bid will secure them the player's services ahead of any of their rivals.

BARCA CLOSE IN ON TWO RIGHT BACKS

Barcelona are set to recruit two right backs to replace the departing Dani Alves this summer, reports Sport.
Barca’s mission to replace the Brazilian is well underway and Sport claims that two right-backs are poised to arrive at the Camp Nou.
The Spanish champions are in advanced negotiations to sign Sevilla’s Aleix Vidal, who was rewarded for his fine form this season with his first call-up to the Spain squad on Tuesday.
Despite the fact he is under contract until 2019 with a €25m release clause fee, the club could snap him up for around €10m.
Barcelona are also close to signing Sporting Lisbon’s Cedric Soares, although they are still awaiting the green light to finalise the deal from coach Luis Enrique.
The 22-year-old, who is already a full international for Portugal, would cost around €7m as his contract expires in 2016.

TRANSFER RUMOURS

Manchester United have agreed a £21m deal to sign Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, writes A Bola.
And the Red Devils will finalise a transfer for the Argentine after Benfica's Portuguese Cup final against Maritimo on Friday.

Fifa news conference

Fifa's director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio has begun the news conference in Zurich.
He said: "First and foremost Fifa initiated this process on 18 November last year.
"Fifa lodged a legal complaint with the federal attorney that had to do with the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
"The second point important to me is that while the timing may not obviously be the best, Fifa welcomes this process and Fifa cooperates fully with the attorney general of Switzerland and Federal Office of Justice and it corresponds to all requests for information."

More from Walter De Gregorio: "I wish to repeat in this case Fifa is the damaged party, this leads to the fact that there were no searches within the offices of Fifa. We co-operate with the information requested because it is of our highest interest that open questions can be answered.
"The general secretary and the president are not involved, as to the names of the people published I am unable to comment. There is hardly anything we can say to the current procedure, it is once again Fifa suffering under these circumstances."

More from Walter De Gregorio: "We are very happy with what is happening right now, it is once again Fifa suffering under the circumstances, it is certainly a difficult moment for us.
"Of course congress will take place, one thing has nothing to do with the other. Congress will be carried out taking into account this current procedure.
"We are of course in very close contact with the attorney general and it is possible that later in the day or tomorrow we can give you an update on the latest situation.
"We know nothing more right now, only what we have been informed through this press release."

Director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio is now taking questions from the media.
The first is about suggestions that Sepp Blatter is now actively looking to postpone Friday's presidential election.
"Then you know more than I do then because there was never such an idea to postpone either the congress or the election," replies De Gregorio
"One thing has nothing to do with the other so we go on with the agenda and the election will take place as planned."

When asked if both investigations are coincidence in terms of timing, Walter De Gregorio said: "The general attorney said the fact that all the people are here for the congress so for them it is easier to talk to them here instead of in different countries."

Is this the lowest ebb for Fifa?
Walter De Gregorio: "As I said, you don't believe me but I say again this for Fifa is good. It's not good in terms of image and reputation but in terms of cleaning up this is good. It is not a nice day, we have other things to do, but the process goes on and we are looking forward to the results. As long as we don't have complete results it leads to speculation."

Walter De Gregorio: "I cannot confirm the names and cannot confirm how many people have been arrested. The World Cup 2018 and 2022 will be played in Russia and Qatar."

Why is Mr Blatter still the right person to run Fifa and are football fans the victims?
Walter De Gregorio: "The damaged part are all of us. Football fans for sure but the president is not involved, how can you say he has to step down? He is the president, if he is re-elected then he is the president for the next four years."

Fifa director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio on Sepp Blatter: "He is focused on the congress. The stress factor is higher today than it was yesterday but he is quite relaxed because he is not involved. All the rest he can accept what will happen. It was Fifa on 18 November that asked the general attorney to open the case."

Fifa director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio: "I can confirm that none of us had an idea that this morning at 6am this would start. If I had the information I can assure you I would have gone to bed earlier.
"We are all surprised. I decided after talking to the president and general secretary we would do a press conference right now although all the information you may need, we do not have."

Another crisis for Fifa?
Fifa director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio: "I have to repeat myself, for us this is good. It's not nice to be here trying to explain something that is not nice but this is good, it confirms we are on the right track. It's not easy but it's the only way to go, we are ready to go the way we started four years ago and nothing will stop us."

What took place in the dawn raid, did they break doors down?
Fifa director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio: "At six o'clock I was sleeping. How it worked and what they did and if there were any problems you will have to ask the general attorney. I received a phone call around seven o'clock and didn't know anything about what happened."

Are these developments occurring because Fifa has not been cleaned up from within?
Fifa director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio: "We can clean up to a certain point then we need support from the authorities. Why did we hand over the Garcia file? Because we need support. We cannot investigate as police can or general prosecutors can. That's the reason why we fully co-operate."

Fifa director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio confirms those delegates arrested will not be able to vote in Friday's election if they are not present to do so.
"He (Sepp Blatter) is not dancing in his office," says De Gregorio. "He is just very calm, he sees what happens and is fully cooperative. He is not a kind of happy man today but knows this is the consequence of what we initiated. It's a surprise that it happened today but not a surprise that it happens."

Fifa arrests round-up

Today has been a bit of blur, with news and snippets about the arrests of seven Fifa officials on suspicion of corruption coming in left, right and centre.
So, to help you make sense of it all (because we're nice like that) here is, in a nutshell, what's happened:
  • US department of Justice says 14 defendants have been charged with "racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies" over a 24-year period.
  • "The indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted both abroad and here in the United States," says US attorney general Loretta Lynch.
  • Four individual defendants and two corporate defendants have pleaded guilty.
  • Fifa insists Friday's presidential election will go ahead as planned.
  • Fifa spokesman Walter De Gregorio: "The president (Sepp Blatter) is not involved, how can you say he has to step down? He is the president, if he is re-elected then he is the president for the next four years."
  • De Gregorio confirms the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will go ahead as planned in Russia and Qatar.

Fifa officials arrested on corruption charges

Swiss police, working with the Federal Office of Justice, have detained and will attempt to extradite a number of Fifa delegates, plus other executives, over fraud allegations
Swiss police have confirmed the arrest of six top football officials who will be extradited to USA on federal corruption charges.

An international law enforcement collaboration resulted in the detaining of numerous officials and sports marketing executives, who were at the Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich ahead of the 65th Fifa Congress .

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is not believed to have been arrested, and the governing body have called a press conference for 10:00BST.

Swiss police have revealed six figures are set to be questioned over fraud allegations: "By order of the Federal Office of Justice (FOJ), six soccer officials were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday and detained pending extradition," a statement read.

"The US authorities suspect them of having received bribes totalling in the millions of US dollars. The FOJ's arrest warrants were issued further to a request by the US authorities.

"The US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating these individuals on suspicion of the acceptance of bribes and kick-backs between the early 1990s and the present day.

"The bribery suspects - sports media and promotion representatives - are alleged to have been involved in schemes to make payments to the soccer functionaries (delegates of Fifa and its sub-organisations) totalling more than 100 million US dollars.

"In return, it is believed that they received media, marketing, and sponsorship rights in connection with soccer tournaments in Latin America. According to the US request, these crimes were agreed and prepared in the US, and payments were carried out via US banks."

The United States Department of Justice have confirmed the nine officials to be arrested are Jeffrey Webb, Eugenio Figueredo, Jack Warner (who resigned from Fifa under a wave of corruption claims in 2011 and is believed to have been arrested elsewhere), Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Costas Takkas, Rafael Esquivel, Jose Maria Marin and Nicolas Leoz.

Four sports marketing executives and another man were also identified by the newspaper, with a total of 14 people named on the indictment.

Zurich police confirmed the extradition process will begin immediately, subject to appeal, while another New York Times source expressed their shock at the two decades of alleged money-laundering and fraud.

"We're struck by just how long this went on for and how it touched nearly every part of what Fifa did," a law enforcement official told the newspaper. "It just seemed to permeate every element of Fifa and was just their way of doing business. It seems like this corruption was institutionalised."

The timing could not be more striking, with Blatter up for re-election as Fifa president on Friday - an election he is favourite to win against opponent Prince Ali bin al Hussein, who was reticent to pass judgement on the arrests.

"Today is a sad day for football," the Jordanian said. "Clearly this is a developing story, the details of which are still emerging. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss embarrassed by Stoke loss

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers accepted his future at the club is in doubt after Steven Gerrard's final match ended in a humiliating defeat.
The Reds said goodbye to captain Gerrard with a 6-1 thrashing at Stoke to finish sixth in the Premier League.
"I've always said if the owners want me to go, then I go," said Rodgers, who has won two of his last nine games.
"For everybody connected with Liverpool, we are all embarrassed by that result."
It was the first time in 52 years the Reds had let in six goals in the league but Rodgers, 42, insisted he still has "a lot to offer the club", despite winning no silverware during his three years in charge.

Liverpool must also now go through two qualifying rounds if they are to compete in the group stage of next season's Europa League.
"A lot has happened this year which has made the job difficult," added Rodgers, who guided the Reds to second place last season.
"Last season, when things were working well, we had the support of everyone but performances like today do not help that and I fully understand that.
"The fans deserve an apology. They were angry at half-time - and rightly so - because that was awful, absolutely awful.
"They have every right to be angry and frustrated and of course I take full responsibility for that as the manager."

No permanent Man Utd deal for Falcao

Manchester United have decided not to keep Radamel Falcao following the end of his season-long loan from Monaco.
The Colombian, who missed Sunday's 0-0 draw with Hull because of injury, scored just four goals in 29 matches.
United did not take up a reported £43.2m option to buy the 29-year-old, who failed to net in his last 13 games.
"Falcao is a top professional and a good human being. I would like to wish him well for the future," Van Gaal told the club's website.
The former Porto and Atletico Madrid striker's last goal came against Leicester on 31 January.
The South American, who missed the 2014 World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury in January last year, made a point of waving to the United fans when he was substituted in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on 17 May, in what proved to be his last appearance.
It is the first decision in what is expected to be a busy summer for Van Gaal, who will look to reshape a squad he has consistently said is not balanced.

And while the 63-year-old is ready to go on an extended holiday to Portugal, after spending most of last summer guiding the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup, he intends to remain in touch with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
"I am the manager," he said. "I have to decide which players are to go and which have to come. That is a process. It is not so easy. It is waiting for clubs to agree or not.
"It is hard work, but more for Ed Woodward than me. I go on holiday but I will always be in contact."
There was no update on the future of goalkeeper David de Gea, who missed the Hull game after failing to recover from a hamstring injury.
"He has to say something, not I," said Van Gaal when asked about the Spaniard.

CHELSEA END SEASON WITH A WIN OVER SUNDERLAND

Champions Chelsea ended the campaign eight points clear at the top after a final-day win over Sunderland.
Steven Fletcher's header put the visitors ahead but a Diego Costa penalty - after John O'Shea barged Juan Cuadrado - levelled before the break.
Costa replaced Didier Drogba, who was carried off by his team-mates after 30 minutes of his final Chelsea outing.
And another sub, Loic Remy, put Chelsea ahead from 20 yards, before concluding the win with a cute close-range finish.

Barcelona are the clean-sheet kings of Europe

Barcelona are the clean sheet kings of Europe this season ahead of Bayern Munich, with Juventus and Monaco sharing the third spot.

Luis Enrique's team's 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday was their 23rd clean sheet of the season, keeping them top of the Huawei Team Ranking, and saw them crowned Spanish champions.

Bayern Munich were beaten 2-1 by Freiburg and therefore unable to add to their tally but have kept 21 clean sheets in 33 games overall.

Serie A champions Juventus battled to a 2-1 victory over Inter but their failure to keep a clean sheet allowed Monaco to move into a tie for third place with 19 shutouts following their 2-0 win against Metz.

Atletico Madrid and Saint-Etienne follow closely behind, with both sides keeping a clean sheet 18 times over the course of the 2014-15 campaign.

Chelsea and Roma share seventh place with 17 clean sheets so far, while Bayer Leverkusen, Villarreal and West Brom complete the top 10 with 16 clean sheets each.

At the bottom end of the ranking, Serie A side Cagliari have struggled the most in defence as they have been able to shut out their opponents just three times all season.

Getafe (five clean sheets), Eintracht Frankfurt (six), Crystal Palace (six) and Caen (seven) are the lowest-ranked representatives from Spain, Germany, England and France respectively.

Coutinho named Liverpool's Player of the Year & Players' Player of the Year

Philippe Coutinho made it clean sweep at Liverpool’s end-of-season award ceremony on Tuesday night after being named the club’s Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year.

The 22-year-old, who has scored five goals and registered five assists in 34 Premier League appearances this season, fended off competition from Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel, Jordan Henderson and Simon Mignolet to win the Players’ Player of the Year.

“This for me is special, it means a lot to me to receive this from Stevie [Gerrard], I want to say thank you to me team-mates,” said the midfielder.

Steven Gerrard also paid tribute to his team-mate after he won Liverpool's 2015 Outstanding Achievement award: "I'm bored of talking about myself. This is Coutinho's night: he's the next big thing and I hope he's here for many years."

The Brazilian also won the award for ‘Performance of the Year’ for his display in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in March.

Coutinho’s long-range strike in the 2-0 win over Southampton in February was also voted as the club’s Goal of the Year.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling was won the club’s Young Player of the Year award but was booed by fans as he collected his trophy.

Who is Barcelona's Player of the Season?

Goal takes a look at the best performers for the Blaugrana in what is turning into a sensational first season under Luis Enrique's stewardship
Barcelona have already won La Liga in 2014-15 and remain on course for an historic treble to match the one they achieved under Pep Guardiola in 2008-09.

Luis Enrique's side were crowned champions of the Primera Division after beating Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The Blaugrana meet Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final at Camp Nou on May 30, before their Champions League showpiece against Juventus in Berlin on June 6 as they aim for a clean sweep of the major titles on offer.

Many individuals have stood out in that remarkable run across three competitions, but Goal narrows it down to three candidates for Barcelona's Player of the Season award. Who deserves to win it?
LIONEL MESSI

Lionel Messi has enjoyed another wonderful season after the relative disappointment of 2013-14, when he was blighted by fitness problems and Barca missed out on a major trophy.

The Argentine attacker has put his injury woes behind him and is back to his breathtaking best, scoring goals galore but also starring in a playmaking role for Luis Enrique's side.
Aided by the more physical presence of Ivan Rakitic in midfield, plus the fantastic forward play of both Neymar and Luis Suarez, the 27-year-old has led from the front in a stunning season which could yet yield all three trophies.

With three games still left to play of a stunning 2014-15 campaign, Messi has 54 goals in 54 appearances and 30 assists.
GERARD PIQUE

Gerard Pique has been questioned more than most for his fading form over the last few seasons, but the defender has found a new lease of life under Luis Enrique.

The 28-year-old admitted before the season started that he no longer considered himself one of the best centre-backs in the world and he had his problems with Luis Enrique early on as he was left out of the team for three consecutive games late last year.
Since then, however, he has been immense and is now back to the kind of form that saw him hailed as one of the best around alongside former club captain Carles Puyol between 2008 and 2012.

Outstanding as the leader of La Liga's meanest defence, Pique has also added a career-best seven goals this term and his danger from set pieces means Barca are now excelling in an area that had been largely fruitless in seasons gone by.
LUIS SUAREZ

Luis Suarez had to wait until late October to make his Barcelona debut as he was banned for four months for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

But the Uruguay striker has made up for lost time since, initially assisting for his team-mates as he struggled to score too many himself, but lately proving lethal in front of goal as well.
In what has been a spectacular season for the 28-year-old, Suarez has hit 24 goals and set up another 20 - even though he missed the start of the campaign and has had to adjust to a new team.

More significantly, however, his hunger, sheer competitiveness, desire, tireless running and excellent work at the heart of the attack have helped create more space for Messi and given Barca another dimension to their forward play in 2014-15. And that is why he has been included in this shortlist ahead of in-form team-mate Neymar.

Who is Manchester United's Player of the Season?

Goalkeeper David de Gea scooped the club's awards on Tuesday after an excellent campaign, but does he get your vote? Goal presents three candidates for the Red Devils
After the disaster that was Manchester United's first season of life after Sir Alex Ferguson, their aim in 2014-15 was, for the first time in a long time, to first and foremost secure a return to the Champions League, with challenging for Premier League glory something of an afterthought.

Louis van Gaal's debut season has had its ups and downs. At worst, especially around midway through the campaign when unfavourable comparisons were being drawn to sacked predecessor David Moyes's record over the same timeframe, it looked like they might again fall short - but they head into their final game assured of a place in the top four thanks to a spring recovery.

But who has been the standout performer? Goal has picked out the three star men from United's campaign, leaving you with a poll to decide who their player of the season has been...

DAVID DE GEA

Both players and fans chose the goalkeeper as their MVP at United’s end-of-season awards gala on Tuesday, backing him for a fantastic season in which he drove home the extent of his development at Old Trafford from nervous youngster to inspirational professional.

De Gea has kept 10 clean sheets behind a Red Devils defence lacking in top-class talent and deprived of consistency by rampant injuries, and is the Premier League’s most likely No.1 to conjure an out-of-your-seat save from an impossible position.

It is no surprise that Real Madrid are circling. If Van Gaal can convince the Spaniard to sign a new contract with United, it would be his best transfer of the summer.

MAROUANE FELLAINI

The former Everton man had a disastrous first season at United after his £27.5 million move, seen as the emblem of Moyes’s ill-fated reign. He did not score in 16 league appearances and many were surprised to see him still at Old Trafford at the end of Van Gaal’s busy first summer.

But the Belgium international has come into his own in the second half of this campaign – and it is not a coincidence that his team have improved considerably over the same period.

Committed and useful both as a way to shut down tough opponents in midfield and as an unorthodox attacking presence, Fellaini has scored a goal every four games since breaking his competitive duck for United against West Brom in spectacular fashion back in October. Whether or not they would be in the top four without him is a serious question.

WAYNE ROONEY

Some were surprised to see him named ahead of Robin van Persie as Van Gaal’s captain but Rooney has again been the key forward presence for the Red Devils this season. With 12 goals and five assists, he has been directly involved in at least four more Premier League strikes than any other United player.

He achieved this despite often being forced back into a midfield role, covering both injuries and awful form in the engine room, while the likes of Van Persie and Radamel Falcao toiled awkwardly ahead of him.

Rooney may not be everyone’s cup of tea but he is hard-working, versatile and ultimately gets results. As perhaps the only United forward who might survive the summer still at Old Trafford, he is set to be just as key in the months ahead

1.Ally Mustapha ‘Barthez’ (Yanga)

2.Hassan Ramadhan ‘Kessy’ (Simba)

5.Nadir Haroub ‘Cannavaro’ (Yanga)

Aishi Manula (Azam)
Mbuyu Twite (Yanga)
Mudathir Yahaya (Azam)

Mrisho Ngassa (Yanga)
Raphael ALpha (Mbeya City)
Rashid Mandawa (Kagera Sugar)
Ibrahim Ajibu (Simba).
