World Cup 2014: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain positive over injury

England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says he is staying positive over his chances of playing in the World Cup.
The FA confirmed that the 20-year-old suffered a medial knee ligament injury in England's warm-up game with Ecuador.
England have put no timescale on his recovery and could name a replacement up until 13 June.
"I'm staying positive and getting to work with the medical team on recovery," the Arsenal player tweeted.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, who added he had his "fingers crossed" over his prospects of being fit for Brazil, will continue to receive treatment and be monitored, the FA added on Twitter.
"It is very disappointing for Alex and the team that he sustained an injury on Wednesday," said England manager Roy Hodgson.
"It's too early to make any decisions about what happens next - it is only 24 hours since the match so we have to wait and see.
"In the meantime, Alex is having regular assessment and treatment.
"The England medical team is in direct dialogue with their Arsenal counterparts and we obviously are all hoping for the best."
“We will do everything we can to keep him with us”

World Cup 2014: Wayne Rooney dismisses Paul Scholes criticism

Wayne Rooney has shrugged off criticism from his former Manchester United team-mate Paul Scholes that he may be past his peak.
The England striker was responding to comments from Scholes, who questioned whether Rooney was "worn out" after a long career.
Rooney, 28, said: "He's been a team-mate but he's been away from the first team for a long time.
"I'm not interested. He's got his opinions so let's leave it at that."

Rooney at World Cups

  • The Manchester United forward played at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups
  • He played in eight games, failing to score in any of them
  • Of those eight, England won three, drew four and lost one
Scholes, 39, who played alongside Rooney at Old Trafford until his second retirement last May, speculated on whether England's management team would have the courage to drop him.
His comments sparked a national debate on Rooney's World Cup role and whether manager Roy Hodgson should pick him in his starting line-up in Brazil.
But the forward answered his critics on Wednesday by scoring his 39th England goal in the 2-2 friendly draw with Ecuador in Miami's Sun Life Stadium, while playing in a left-flank role.
Rooney added: "I've seen a lot of you saying he's coached me and been around the team, but he hasn't. I'm not really going to react.
"I'm not really interested in what anyone else has got to say. I'm interested in what Roy Hodgson, the coaching staff here and the people around me say. People have their opinions but I don't agree with them."
Pat Nevin: Has Rooney lost his hunger?
Pat Nevin analysis: Has Wayne Rooney lost his hunger?
The Manchester United striker confirmed he has recovered from the groin injury he suffered at the end of the domestic season and declared he would be fully fit to play in England's World Cup opener against Italy.
Rooney has previously expressed reservations about playing on the left-flank for his club but said he has no problems about fulfilling that role.
"The manager didn't have to tell me what to do," said Rooney.
"I know how to play that role. I've played it many times and I have no problem doing that.
"I can play in different positions. I've proved that over the years. It is down to the manager. It is not about me it's about the team. If the manager wants to play me up top, in behind, left, right I'm happy to do that."
England start their campaign against Italy on 14 June before taking on Uruguay (19 June) and Costa Rica (24 June).

I am behind Ronaldo injury problems, claims witchdoctor

A Ghanaian has said that he has provoked the Portugal star to be spiritually wounded before the World Cup and will prevent him from facing the Black Stars
A witchdoctor from Ghana has said that he is behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury problems, which "can never be cured by any medic".

The Real Madrid and Portugal star is suffering from tendonitis and is set to miss out on his country’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Mexico and Ireland, though Nana Kwaku Bonsam has claimed responsibility for the Ballon d’Or winner’s plight, which he has claimed to be “spiritual”.
“I know what Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury is about, I’m working on him,” the witchdoctor told Ghanaian radio station Angel FM.

“I am very serious about it. Last week, I went around looking for four dogs and I got them to be used in manufacturing a special spirit called ‘Kahwiri Kapam’.

“I said it four months ago that I will work on Cristiano Ronaldo and rule him out of the World Cup or at least prevent him from playing against Ghana and the best thing I can do is to keep him out though injury.

“This injury can never be cured by any medic, they can never see what is causing the injury because it is spiritual. Today, it is his knee, tomorrow it is thigh, next day it is something else.”

Ghana are due to play Portugal on June 26 in Brasilia, in what will be their final match of Group G, which also includes Germany and USA.

Liverpool hope to complete Can deal

Liverpool are in advanced talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Germany Under-21 midfielder Emre Can.
The 20-year-old has a £10m release clause in his contract and Liverpool have indicated they are willing to meet that figure.
The deal had appeared to stall over the weekend because of the player's personal terms.
But talks are progressing more smoothly now and all parties are hopeful a deal can be concluded in the coming week.
Can, who is also eligible for Turkey, joined Leverkusen from Bayern Munich last summer in a deal worth £4m.
He impressed Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers with a series of combative performances that helped Leverkusen finish fourth in the Bundesliga and reach next season's Champions League.
The Frankfurt-born player prefers to play in central midfield but can also operate in defence.

Diego Costa: Atletico Madrid striker passes Chelsea medical

Spain striker Diego Costa has passed a medical at Chelsea ahead of a proposed £32m transfer from Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea met the buyout clause in the 25-year-old's contract with Atletico and he will now negotiate personal terms.
Costa scored 36 goals in 52 games for Atletico this season as they won their first La Liga title since 1996 and reached the Champions League final.
The Brazil-born forward is in Spain's World Cup squad.

  • Copa del Rey wins: 2012-13
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said in May that the addition of a "killer" striker would be a key priority during the summer.
The London club scored 71 goals in the Premier League this season, 31 fewer than champions Manchester City, who finished four points ahead of them.
Chelsea strikers Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba contributed a total of 19 of those in the league, with 33-year-old Eto'o, now a free agent, scoring nine of them.
"We have to try to win as a team, to improve as a team, but also add the attacking player with that killer instinct," Mourinho said last month.
Mourinho will hope that Costa will go some way towards addressing that problem having enjoyed a prolific campaign with Atletico.
Costa scored 27 goals in La Liga and only finished third behind Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo (31) and Barcelona's Lionel Messi (28) on the list of top goalscorers.
The striker also scored against Chelsea from the penalty spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League, one of his eight goals in the tournament, as Atletico came from behind to win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Costa was born and raised in Brazil and made two friendly appearances for them last year before he became a naturalised Spaniard.

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez named world's most valuable players

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is the most valuable player in world football and worth almost twice as much as Cristiano Ronaldo, according to a study by the CIES Football Observatory.
The ninth edition of the annual football review has estimated the Argentina international's value at £161.5million ahead of second-placed Ronaldo on £85.2m and Liverpool's Luis Suarez, whose worth is put at £79.4m.
Chelsea's Eden Hazard and Messi's Barcelona team-mate Neymar complete the top five, valued at £61.2m and £50.6m respectively.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo's Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale comes in at seventh, valued at £50.9m, almost £30m less than the world-record £80.6m fee Real Madrid paid Tottenham for the Wales international's services last year.
Colombia striker Radamel Falcao and Argentina winger Erik Lamela have seen their values fall by more than 50 per cent since completing transfers 12 months ago.
Falcao joined Monaco for £48.4m from Porto last season and is now worth £22.7m, according to the study, while Lamela, who joined Tottenham for a fee of £28.2m from Roma, is valued at £13.6m.
The 96-page publication also found Real Madrid fielded the most expensive starting line-up ever during their successful 2013/2014 UEFA Champions League campaign with average transfer expenditure per player of over £24m.
By contrast, La Liga winners and Champions League runner-ups Atletico Madrid had average transfer fees of just £3.2m per player.
The CIES Football Observatory uses a database that has been developed since 2005 and will disclose their 2014 World Cup predictions based on their formula within the next week.

World Cup 2014: Video profiles of every team in Brazil

Group A

Brazil

Play media
World Cup 2014 team profile: Brazil
The hosts are one of the favourites for the tournament and boast an 11-year unbeaten record on home soil, but Brazil will be looking to banish memories of hosting the 1950 World Cup, when they were beaten by Uruguay in the final game.
The flicks and tricks remain second nature, but this Brazil side is also resilient and well organised, moulded by the pragmatism of 2002 World Cup winning-coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Scolari has the required major tournament know-how, the players are talented and well-drilled, a passionate home crowd will surely inspire the team and even the iconic yellow jerseys can intimidate the opposition.

Croatia

Play media
World Cup 2014 team profile: Croatia
Semi-finalists at the 1998 World Cup in France, Croatia have struggled on football's biggest stage ever since and only just qualified for Brazil by beating minnows Iceland in a play-off.
Mario Mandzukic, 28, averaged better than a goal every other game in 2013, helping Bayern Munich win a historic treble and top scoring for Croatia with four goals in qualifying. The goals have dried up recently, though, registering just twice in his last 11 appearances.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola says "there is nobody better in the air in the world" than the striker, but his red card for a studs-up lunge in the play-off win over Iceland will limit his World Cup involvement.

Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal squad selfie as World Cup preparations begin

The Real Madrid forward posed for a photograph with his international team-mates in the build-up to the tournament, which takes place this summer in Brazil
Cristiano Ronaldo has posted a 'selfie' of himself and his Portugal team-mates on social networking website Twitter, as they step up their preparations for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
The Seleccao captain was missed by his team in their last warm-up match, a 0-0 draw against Greece at the Estadio Nacional.
The Real Madrid star had to watch from the stands due to a minor thigh problem, which has been troubling him since the closing stages of last season.
But the result doesn't seem to have affected squad spirit - Ronaldo posting the photo with the caption "a team representing a country!"
Paulo Bento's men will take on Mexico and the Republic of Ireland next, before their World Cup opener against heavily-fancied Germany.

Cesc Fabregas: Barcelona midfielder set to leave club

Barcelona are prepared to let Cesc Fabregas leave this summer for £30m - and the midfielder would prefer a Premier League return.
The Catalan giants have made potential suitors aware about the 27-year-old Spain international's availability.
He rejoined Barcelona in 2011 from Arsenal for £35m, who have a buy-back option on their former captain.
Fabregas signed for the Gunners from Barca as a 15-year-old in 2003 and scored 59 goals in 305 games.
Arsenal are yet to express any interest in bringing their former captain to Emirates Stadium again.
He moved back to Barca on a five-year contract - which still has two years to run - and has registered 35 goals in 129 appearances, while accounting for the most assists in La Liga over the past two seasons. He has won La Liga and the Copa del Rey at the club.
Fabregas was the subject of two unsuccessful bids from Manchester United last summer, but told BBC Sport in February he was "flattered" by their interest.
He is part of the Spain squad set to begin their defence of the World Cup against the Netherlands on 13 June.

He tapped in a fifth-minute winner from close range on Saturday, adding to his volley in the draw against Ecuador.
Van Persie's tally now stands at 43 goals in 84 internationals.
"Ghana pinned us back and that made it difficult," said Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, who will take over as Manchester United boss after the World Cup.
"It [our attacking fluency] will get better. We've only just started."
