Fifa arrests round-up

Today has been a bit of blur, with news and snippets about the arrests of seven Fifa officials on suspicion of corruption coming in left, right and centre.
So, to help you make sense of it all (because we're nice like that) here is, in a nutshell, what's happened:
  • US department of Justice says 14 defendants have been charged with "racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies" over a 24-year period.
  • "The indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted both abroad and here in the United States," says US attorney general Loretta Lynch.
  • Four individual defendants and two corporate defendants have pleaded guilty.
  • Fifa insists Friday's presidential election will go ahead as planned.
  • Fifa spokesman Walter De Gregorio: "The president (Sepp Blatter) is not involved, how can you say he has to step down? He is the president, if he is re-elected then he is the president for the next four years."
  • De Gregorio confirms the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will go ahead as planned in Russia and Qatar.

Fifa officials arrested on corruption charges

Swiss police, working with the Federal Office of Justice, have detained and will attempt to extradite a number of Fifa delegates, plus other executives, over fraud allegations
Swiss police have confirmed the arrest of six top football officials who will be extradited to USA on federal corruption charges.

An international law enforcement collaboration resulted in the detaining of numerous officials and sports marketing executives, who were at the Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich ahead of the 65th Fifa Congress .

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is not believed to have been arrested, and the governing body have called a press conference for 10:00BST.

Swiss police have revealed six figures are set to be questioned over fraud allegations: "By order of the Federal Office of Justice (FOJ), six soccer officials were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday and detained pending extradition," a statement read.

"The US authorities suspect them of having received bribes totalling in the millions of US dollars. The FOJ's arrest warrants were issued further to a request by the US authorities.

"The US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating these individuals on suspicion of the acceptance of bribes and kick-backs between the early 1990s and the present day.

"The bribery suspects - sports media and promotion representatives - are alleged to have been involved in schemes to make payments to the soccer functionaries (delegates of Fifa and its sub-organisations) totalling more than 100 million US dollars.

"In return, it is believed that they received media, marketing, and sponsorship rights in connection with soccer tournaments in Latin America. According to the US request, these crimes were agreed and prepared in the US, and payments were carried out via US banks."

The United States Department of Justice have confirmed the nine officials to be arrested are Jeffrey Webb, Eugenio Figueredo, Jack Warner (who resigned from Fifa under a wave of corruption claims in 2011 and is believed to have been arrested elsewhere), Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Costas Takkas, Rafael Esquivel, Jose Maria Marin and Nicolas Leoz.

Four sports marketing executives and another man were also identified by the newspaper, with a total of 14 people named on the indictment.

Zurich police confirmed the extradition process will begin immediately, subject to appeal, while another New York Times source expressed their shock at the two decades of alleged money-laundering and fraud.

"We're struck by just how long this went on for and how it touched nearly every part of what Fifa did," a law enforcement official told the newspaper. "It just seemed to permeate every element of Fifa and was just their way of doing business. It seems like this corruption was institutionalised."

The timing could not be more striking, with Blatter up for re-election as Fifa president on Friday - an election he is favourite to win against opponent Prince Ali bin al Hussein, who was reticent to pass judgement on the arrests.

"Today is a sad day for football," the Jordanian said. "Clearly this is a developing story, the details of which are still emerging. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss embarrassed by Stoke loss

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers accepted his future at the club is in doubt after Steven Gerrard's final match ended in a humiliating defeat.
The Reds said goodbye to captain Gerrard with a 6-1 thrashing at Stoke to finish sixth in the Premier League.
"I've always said if the owners want me to go, then I go," said Rodgers, who has won two of his last nine games.
"For everybody connected with Liverpool, we are all embarrassed by that result."
It was the first time in 52 years the Reds had let in six goals in the league but Rodgers, 42, insisted he still has "a lot to offer the club", despite winning no silverware during his three years in charge.

Liverpool must also now go through two qualifying rounds if they are to compete in the group stage of next season's Europa League.
"A lot has happened this year which has made the job difficult," added Rodgers, who guided the Reds to second place last season.
"Last season, when things were working well, we had the support of everyone but performances like today do not help that and I fully understand that.
"The fans deserve an apology. They were angry at half-time - and rightly so - because that was awful, absolutely awful.
"They have every right to be angry and frustrated and of course I take full responsibility for that as the manager."

No permanent Man Utd deal for Falcao

Manchester United have decided not to keep Radamel Falcao following the end of his season-long loan from Monaco.
The Colombian, who missed Sunday's 0-0 draw with Hull because of injury, scored just four goals in 29 matches.
United did not take up a reported £43.2m option to buy the 29-year-old, who failed to net in his last 13 games.
"Falcao is a top professional and a good human being. I would like to wish him well for the future," Van Gaal told the club's website.
The former Porto and Atletico Madrid striker's last goal came against Leicester on 31 January.
The South American, who missed the 2014 World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury in January last year, made a point of waving to the United fans when he was substituted in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on 17 May, in what proved to be his last appearance.
It is the first decision in what is expected to be a busy summer for Van Gaal, who will look to reshape a squad he has consistently said is not balanced.

Atletico Madrid (2011-13) 86 68

And while the 63-year-old is ready to go on an extended holiday to Portugal, after spending most of last summer guiding the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup, he intends to remain in touch with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
"I am the manager," he said. "I have to decide which players are to go and which have to come. That is a process. It is not so easy. It is waiting for clubs to agree or not.
"It is hard work, but more for Ed Woodward than me. I go on holiday but I will always be in contact."
There was no update on the future of goalkeeper David de Gea, who missed the Hull game after failing to recover from a hamstring injury.
"He has to say something, not I," said Van Gaal when asked about the Spaniard.

CHELSEA END SEASON WITH A WIN OVER SUNDERLAND

Champions Chelsea ended the campaign eight points clear at the top after a final-day win over Sunderland.
Steven Fletcher's header put the visitors ahead but a Diego Costa penalty - after John O'Shea barged Juan Cuadrado - levelled before the break.
Costa replaced Didier Drogba, who was carried off by his team-mates after 30 minutes of his final Chelsea outing.
And another sub, Loic Remy, put Chelsea ahead from 20 yards, before concluding the win with a cute close-range finish.

Barcelona are the clean-sheet kings of Europe

Barcelona are the clean sheet kings of Europe this season ahead of Bayern Munich, with Juventus and Monaco sharing the third spot.

Luis Enrique's team's 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday was their 23rd clean sheet of the season, keeping them top of the Huawei Team Ranking, and saw them crowned Spanish champions.

Bayern Munich were beaten 2-1 by Freiburg and therefore unable to add to their tally but have kept 21 clean sheets in 33 games overall.

Serie A champions Juventus battled to a 2-1 victory over Inter but their failure to keep a clean sheet allowed Monaco to move into a tie for third place with 19 shutouts following their 2-0 win against Metz.

Atletico Madrid and Saint-Etienne follow closely behind, with both sides keeping a clean sheet 18 times over the course of the 2014-15 campaign.

Chelsea and Roma share seventh place with 17 clean sheets so far, while Bayer Leverkusen, Villarreal and West Brom complete the top 10 with 16 clean sheets each.

At the bottom end of the ranking, Serie A side Cagliari have struggled the most in defence as they have been able to shut out their opponents just three times all season.

Getafe (five clean sheets), Eintracht Frankfurt (six), Crystal Palace (six) and Caen (seven) are the lowest-ranked representatives from Spain, Germany, England and France respectively.

Coutinho named Liverpool's Player of the Year & Players' Player of the Year

Philippe Coutinho made it clean sweep at Liverpool’s end-of-season award ceremony on Tuesday night after being named the club’s Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year.

The 22-year-old, who has scored five goals and registered five assists in 34 Premier League appearances this season, fended off competition from Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel, Jordan Henderson and Simon Mignolet to win the Players’ Player of the Year.

“This for me is special, it means a lot to me to receive this from Stevie [Gerrard], I want to say thank you to me team-mates,” said the midfielder.

Steven Gerrard also paid tribute to his team-mate after he won Liverpool's 2015 Outstanding Achievement award: "I'm bored of talking about myself. This is Coutinho's night: he's the next big thing and I hope he's here for many years."

The Brazilian also won the award for ‘Performance of the Year’ for his display in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in March.

Coutinho’s long-range strike in the 2-0 win over Southampton in February was also voted as the club’s Goal of the Year.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling was won the club’s Young Player of the Year award but was booed by fans as he collected his trophy.

Who is Barcelona's Player of the Season?

Goal takes a look at the best performers for the Blaugrana in what is turning into a sensational first season under Luis Enrique's stewardship
Barcelona have already won La Liga in 2014-15 and remain on course for an historic treble to match the one they achieved under Pep Guardiola in 2008-09.

Luis Enrique's side were crowned champions of the Primera Division after beating Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The Blaugrana meet Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final at Camp Nou on May 30, before their Champions League showpiece against Juventus in Berlin on June 6 as they aim for a clean sweep of the major titles on offer.

Many individuals have stood out in that remarkable run across three competitions, but Goal narrows it down to three candidates for Barcelona's Player of the Season award. Who deserves to win it?
LIONEL MESSI

Lionel Messi has enjoyed another wonderful season after the relative disappointment of 2013-14, when he was blighted by fitness problems and Barca missed out on a major trophy.

The Argentine attacker has put his injury woes behind him and is back to his breathtaking best, scoring goals galore but also starring in a playmaking role for Luis Enrique's side.
Aided by the more physical presence of Ivan Rakitic in midfield, plus the fantastic forward play of both Neymar and Luis Suarez, the 27-year-old has led from the front in a stunning season which could yet yield all three trophies.

With three games still left to play of a stunning 2014-15 campaign, Messi has 54 goals in 54 appearances and 30 assists.
GERARD PIQUE

Gerard Pique has been questioned more than most for his fading form over the last few seasons, but the defender has found a new lease of life under Luis Enrique.

The 28-year-old admitted before the season started that he no longer considered himself one of the best centre-backs in the world and he had his problems with Luis Enrique early on as he was left out of the team for three consecutive games late last year.
Since then, however, he has been immense and is now back to the kind of form that saw him hailed as one of the best around alongside former club captain Carles Puyol between 2008 and 2012.

Outstanding as the leader of La Liga's meanest defence, Pique has also added a career-best seven goals this term and his danger from set pieces means Barca are now excelling in an area that had been largely fruitless in seasons gone by.
LUIS SUAREZ

Luis Suarez had to wait until late October to make his Barcelona debut as he was banned for four months for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

But the Uruguay striker has made up for lost time since, initially assisting for his team-mates as he struggled to score too many himself, but lately proving lethal in front of goal as well.
In what has been a spectacular season for the 28-year-old, Suarez has hit 24 goals and set up another 20 - even though he missed the start of the campaign and has had to adjust to a new team.

More significantly, however, his hunger, sheer competitiveness, desire, tireless running and excellent work at the heart of the attack have helped create more space for Messi and given Barca another dimension to their forward play in 2014-15. And that is why he has been included in this shortlist ahead of in-form team-mate Neymar.

Who is Manchester United's Player of the Season?

Goalkeeper David de Gea scooped the club's awards on Tuesday after an excellent campaign, but does he get your vote? Goal presents three candidates for the Red Devils
After the disaster that was Manchester United's first season of life after Sir Alex Ferguson, their aim in 2014-15 was, for the first time in a long time, to first and foremost secure a return to the Champions League, with challenging for Premier League glory something of an afterthought.

Louis van Gaal's debut season has had its ups and downs. At worst, especially around midway through the campaign when unfavourable comparisons were being drawn to sacked predecessor David Moyes's record over the same timeframe, it looked like they might again fall short - but they head into their final game assured of a place in the top four thanks to a spring recovery.

But who has been the standout performer? Goal has picked out the three star men from United's campaign, leaving you with a poll to decide who their player of the season has been...

DAVID DE GEA

Both players and fans chose the goalkeeper as their MVP at United’s end-of-season awards gala on Tuesday, backing him for a fantastic season in which he drove home the extent of his development at Old Trafford from nervous youngster to inspirational professional.

De Gea has kept 10 clean sheets behind a Red Devils defence lacking in top-class talent and deprived of consistency by rampant injuries, and is the Premier League’s most likely No.1 to conjure an out-of-your-seat save from an impossible position.

It is no surprise that Real Madrid are circling. If Van Gaal can convince the Spaniard to sign a new contract with United, it would be his best transfer of the summer.

MAROUANE FELLAINI

The former Everton man had a disastrous first season at United after his £27.5 million move, seen as the emblem of Moyes’s ill-fated reign. He did not score in 16 league appearances and many were surprised to see him still at Old Trafford at the end of Van Gaal’s busy first summer.

But the Belgium international has come into his own in the second half of this campaign – and it is not a coincidence that his team have improved considerably over the same period.

Committed and useful both as a way to shut down tough opponents in midfield and as an unorthodox attacking presence, Fellaini has scored a goal every four games since breaking his competitive duck for United against West Brom in spectacular fashion back in October. Whether or not they would be in the top four without him is a serious question.

WAYNE ROONEY

Some were surprised to see him named ahead of Robin van Persie as Van Gaal’s captain but Rooney has again been the key forward presence for the Red Devils this season. With 12 goals and five assists, he has been directly involved in at least four more Premier League strikes than any other United player.

He achieved this despite often being forced back into a midfield role, covering both injuries and awful form in the engine room, while the likes of Van Persie and Radamel Falcao toiled awkwardly ahead of him.

Rooney may not be everyone’s cup of tea but he is hard-working, versatile and ultimately gets results. As perhaps the only United forward who might survive the summer still at Old Trafford, he is set to be just as key in the months ahead

1.Ally Mustapha ‘Barthez’ (Yanga)

2.Hassan Ramadhan ‘Kessy’ (Simba)

5.Nadir Haroub ‘Cannavaro’ (Yanga)

Ngassa asaini miaka minne Afrika Kusini.
